When was AHERA enacted?

AHERA, the Asbestos Hazard Energy Response Act was implemented under the Toxic Substance Control Act in 1986. It was established to put protocols and procedures in place to deal with asbestos in school buildings. Since the asbestos materials and products present in schools are often very old, they can break down and become friable, which can pose a hazard to students, teachers, and other school employees.

What do class 1 asbestos jobs involve?

Class 1 asbestos work is the most hazardous class for asbestos jobs. Class 1 would be required for the removal of asbestos-containing thermal system insulation and sprayed-on or troweled-on surfacing materials.

Employers must presume that thermal system insulation and surfacing material found in pre-1981 construction is ACM.

Thermal system insulation includes ACM applied to pipes, boilers, tanks, ducts, or other structural components to prevent heat loss or gain. Surfacing materials include decorative plaster on ceilings and walls; acoustical materials on decking, walls, and ceilings; and fireproofing on structural members.

What’s the most effective way to clean contaminated clothing?

Employers must ensure that the laundering of clothing contaminated with hazardous materials such as asbestos does not release airborne asbestos in excess of the PEL or STEL. Employers who give contaminated clothing to other persons for laundering must inform them of the requirement to follow procedures that do not release airborne asbestos in excess of the PEL or STEL.

Employers must transport contaminated clothing in sealed, impermeable bags or other closed impermeable containers bearing appropriate labels. The competent person must examine employee work suits at least once per work shift for rips or tears. Rips or tears found while an employee is working must be mended or the work suit replaced immediately.

What is hazardous building?

Any structure used for permanent or temporary habitation or other purposes, including buildings that are closed permanently or abandoned, that presents a significant and unforeseen risk to emergency personnel.

  • Any building undergoing demolition or renovation that involves the removal or the Alteration of any load bearing structural components or safety elements, stairs rails, etc.
  • Any building under construction or renovation where hazardous materials are used or stored, that present a significant hazard to emergency personnel.
  • Any building where free asbestos is known to be present.
  • Any building that due to its condition, is subject to structural collapse without warning.

What are the OSHA asbestos training requirements?

  • 29 CFR 1910.1001,
  • 29 CFR 1915.1001,
  • 29 CFR 1926.1101, and
  • AHERA 40 CFR 763.92(a)(1)

Where can I get OSHA asbestos awareness training?
