What is the EM 385?

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) Safety and Health Requirements Manual (EM 385-1-1) is the gold standard for Safety and Occupational Health regulations. The manual holds a long history dating back to 1941 and is designed to facilitate the standardization of all safety programs. The EM 385-1-1 prescribes the safety and health requirements for all Corps of Engineers activities and operations.

What Does EM in the EM 385-1-1 Mean?

Engineers Manual

What Section of the EM 385-1-1 Outlines the Fall Protection Requirements?

What section of the EM 385-1-1 outlines the Fall Protection requirements?
Fall Protection requirements are found in Section 21 of the EM 385-1-1.

Section 21 Contains the Following Topics:

  • General Overview
  • Roles and Responsibilities
  • Training
  • Fall Protection Program
  • Controlled Access Zones
  • Fall Protection Systems
  • Covers
  • Safety Net Systems for Fall Protection
  • Personal Fall Protection Systems
  • Ladder-Climbing Devices (LCDs)
  • Scaffolds, Work Platforms and Elevating/Aerial Platforms
  • Warning Line Systems (WLS)
  • Safety Monitoring System (SMS)
  • Rescue Plan and Procedures
  • Working Over or Near Water
  • Other Engineered Fall Protection Systems

However, fall protection doesn’t stop at Section 21. Throughout the EM 385-1-1 you will find task specific fall protection information that the Fall Protection section may not cover.

What OSHA Form Does the EM 385 1-1 Require for Recording Contract Mishaps?

The OSHA form 300 is used to record work related injuries and illnesses. For instance:

Information about every work-related death and every work-related injury or illness that involves loss of consciousness, restricted work activity or job transfer, days away from work, or medical treatment beyond first aid, must be listed on the OSHA 300 Form. This information is collected by the Site Safety and Health Officer.

Significant work-related injuries and illnesses that are diagnosed by a physician or licensed health care professional are also recorded.

Work-related injuries and illnesses that meet any of the specific recording criteria listed in 29 CFR Part 1904.8 through 1904.12.

Reminders:
The contractor must complete an Injury and Illness Incident Report (OSHA Form 301) or equivalent form for each injury or illness recorded on this form. If you’re not sure whether a case is recordable, call your local OSHA office for help.

Great EM385 online training

This was the easiest to follow of all my online training. Sometimes the speaker's voice can get tiresome, but the content is good. I do have to say that some of the answers in the test were a little questionable. Some answers were marked wrong, but in the EM385-1-1 document, it was correct. Maybe something they need to fix.

Needs Work

I like the format, and ease of use. However, Diction and outside interference is distracting while listening. When Recording the audio, be in an area that other workers. Be consistent Tck/dot/point? Emergency, not Amergency. Immediate, not Ammediate. MSDS as an acronym went out of use nearly a decade ago. What year of the 385-1-1 did you use for this training? Few errors training/test, spelling.
